Microsoft has denied reports that almost no one remains to work on id Tech following the recent mass layoffs at id Software. “There are dozens of people working on id Tech across multiple locations. Reports that there’s only one person left in Texas are inaccurate,” Microsoft said in a statement provided to Windows Central.

Kotaku reported that the team responsible for id Tech was among those heavily affected by the layoffs. One source told the publication that the studio had lost much of its institutional knowledge of the engine, claiming that “id Tech as a technology is probably dead forever.” The same report referred to earlier claims that only one member of the id Tech team remained in Texas. Microsoft has now directly disputed that specific claim, although the company did not disclose the exact size or locations of the remaining teams.

According to Windows Central’s Jez Corden, Microsoft also has no plans to force id Software or MachineGames to abandon id Tech in favor of Unreal Engine. This part of the report is based on Corden’s sources rather than the quoted Microsoft statement.

It remains unclear what id Software will develop next. The studio reportedly had several project pitches under consideration before the layoffs, but none of them are known to have received the green light.
