At QuakeCon 2025, Marty Stratton, executive producer and studio director at id Software, and Hugo Martin, creative director behind DOOM (2016), DOOM Eternal and Doom: The Dark Ages, took the stage to deliver a wave of announcements that delighted fans of both classic and modern shooters.
Doom: The Dark Ages – Major Update & New Mode
Following the successful launch of Doom: The Dark Ages, the team announced a free update available today. The centerpiece is a new endless arena mode called Riptorium, which lets players customize their own combat challenges by selecting arenas, enemy types, wave count, difficulty level, music, and time limits.
Other gameplay updates include:
Increased weapon swap speed
Animation canceling for blocking and combat responsiveness
Adjustable slow-motion effects for melee and shield actions
Rebalanced music during large-scale encounters
Tweaks to pacing and enemy composition in Acts II and III
The game is also available at a 25% discount, and players who log in before September 1 will receive a limited-time Slayer skin.
Doom Eternal Modding Leaves Beta
Modding support for Doom Eternal is now official. Previously in beta, the modding interface now lets players browse, activate, and organize nearly 700 community-made mods via a dedicated launcher. Creators have access to the idStudio toolset — the same tools the developers use — directly through Steam.
Heretic + Hexen Re-Released
id Software also announced the definitive re-release of the classic fantasy shooters Heretic and Hexen. Originally developed by Raven Software and published by id, these versions feature:
Enhanced visuals
Restored and unreleased content
Crossplay multiplayer
Mod support
New soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult
Improved accessibility and localization
The update is free for players who already own the original games.
