Shacknews reported earlier today that this year's QuakeCon will feature tournaments for Duel, and the team-based mode Sacrifice. To participate in these events players well be expected to qualify a berth via what I imagine to be online qualifiers. We don't really know much about Sacrifice at the moment and it's unclear if there will be more Champions available when the QuakeCon takes place later in the summer.

Quake Champions isn't even released yet, but id Software and Bethesda are holding an eSports tournament for the game at this year's QuakeCon... Qualifiers will be begin in June...

There will be a large scale open beta which will be begin on May 12, and continue to May 21, 2017. This should give teams a first crack (potentially) at testing their skill out against other Quakers.
