Q: Can new tournament formats like this breathe new life into Quake? What do you think about the Frontier format?
proZaC: That's really two questions. Unfortunately, I don't think anything can bring Quake Live back to life. The game is just too hard and demanding for most players today.
As for the format itself, I think it's interesting. But if I'm being completely honest, I don't think it'll have the kind of success you're hoping for. Still, huge respect for giving it a shot.
Q: What qualities does a player need to win a tournament like this? Which current players have them?
proZaC: Good question. I think this kind of format favors creative players who can think fast and adapt without already knowing the map inside out.
Most of today's top players probably have those qualities, but it's been a long time since anyone really tested them in this kind of situation.
Q: Would you play in a tournament like this yourself?
proZaC: Sure, why not. Show me the money.
Q: Which legendary players from the past would you most like to see competing again?
proZaC: czM, Cooller, cYpheR, fazz, fox, toxic... The list could go on forever. Basically anyone from the good old days.
Q: What would you say to someone who has just discovered Quake Live and is thinking about trying it?
proZaC: Go for it. Just be ready for a really steep learning curve and for playing against dinosaurs who already know pretty much everything there is to know about the game.
I'd try to find a friend or someone around your own skill level and improve together. Learn, watch demos, keep playing.
Q: What's the best map in Quake history?
proZaC: Depends – Duel or TDM? For Duel, probably ztn3tourney1. For TDM, I'd say q3dm6, mostly because of how popular it became. But purely from a competitive point of view, ospdm5 is definitely up there as one of the best TDM maps.
Q: What needs to happen for a new generation of players to start playing Arena FPS?
proZaC: I'm not sure. People would need to want to put in the work again and really grind their mechanics and strategic thinking.
But with so many easier and more relaxed FPS games around now, I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon.
The first Frontier One Map Cup will take place on October 24, with every match played on the same map revealed only several days before the tournament.
