baksteen spoke to Frontier Gaming about the new one-map tournament format, learning new maps, Quake Champions and what he would like to see from the future of the series.

Q: Can new tournament formats breathe new life into Quake? What do you think about the Frontier format?

baksteen: I think it's an interesting concept. Quake hasn't had tournaments on genuinely new maps for a long time, so we'll see whether players and viewers enjoy it.

It's also a good way to test new maps and find out which ones are actually good enough to be used in other leagues.

Q: What qualities do you need to win a tournament like this? Which current players have them?

baksteen: This format will favor the players who spend the most time grinding the map and those who learn faster than everyone else.

Q: Are you going to play?

baksteen: Yes. I'll try to participate in the tournaments whenever I get the chance.

Q: Which former Quake legend would you like to see competing again?

baksteen: Cooller.

Q: What would you say to someone who has just discovered Quake Live and is thinking about trying it?

baksteen: Just get in and play. There are plenty of servers specifically for beginners.

Q: Best map in Quake history?

baksteen: Monsoon from Quake 4.

Q: What does Arena FPS need to attract a new generation of players?

baksteen: I think one of the mistakes Quake Champions made was assuming that the original Quake formula no longer worked in the modern world, so the game had to move closer to team-based games like Overwatch.

You need to believe in what made Quake a good game in the first place. That formula still works if you modernize everything around it.

I'd like to see a Quake III remaster or remake, or a completely new Quake with modern graphics but classic gameplay. And this time, don't cut corners on the things that keep players around – proper tutorials, matchmaking and skins. Quake Champions failed in those areas.

The first Frontier One Map Cup will be played on a single map revealed only several days before the tournament, giving every participant the same limited preparation window.
